- On Thursday (26 September 2024) Hamilton City Council voted to delay a decision on the plans for a raised crossing on Heaphy Terrace.
- This single raised crossing has a cost of $689,000 according to the preferred option that Council staff proposed.
- NZTA has agreed to funding 90% of the crossing under the CERF scheme.
- The Council’s Infrastructure and Transport Committee voted unanimously (14-0) to delay the decision.
- The delay is to wait on a clear response from NZTA about whether a different type of crossing can be installed or the crossing moved without the Council losing that central government funding.
- Councillors are all supportive of an improved pedestrian crossing at this location, though debates surround both the type of crossing to install and how it will impact the nearby roundabout.
In the second major transport planning decision of the meeting, Councillors compromised on the issue of installing three raised crossing on the planned Morrinsville Road/Silverdale Road/Matangi Road roundabout. Meeting minutes indicate that Council agreed to two raised crossing on the side roads and a non-raised signalised crossing on Morrinsville Road (currently part of State Highway 26).
