Hamilton at a Crossroads? Why Your Vote Matters

By Rachel Afeaki ( Hamilton East Ward candidate 2025 )

2025 Hamilton City Council election is not just another round of voting—it is a defining moment for our city. The choices we make today will shape the Hamilton and the region our families, businesses, and communities live in tomorrow.

Local government decisions affect us every single day: the safety of our streets, the affordability of housing, the quality of our parks, libraries, and transport systems. Yet too often, local elections are overlooked. Why? Many assume one vote won’t make a difference. The truth is, council elections are often decided by slim margins—therefore, your vote carries weight.

Break the cycle

As of today (as I write this), Tuesday 30 September 15,350 votes had been received, 13.3% of the 115,433 enrolled voters have voted. The last local election in 2022 saw a voting turnout of 29.4% (Source: Hamilton City Council) Are we on track to surpass 2022’s dismal turnout figure? For Hamilton City’s sake – I hope so!

We all know this – Hamilton is growing and at pace, and with this growth comes real challenges (we have enough challenges already): building and maintaining infrastructure, attracting investment, managing rates responsibly, and ensuring services keep up (quantity and quality) with demand. These are not abstract debates—each determine whether families can afford to live here, whether businesses can succeed, and whether Hamilton remains a city where all people can thrive and be proud of. The councillors we elect will set the direction for how we balance financial responsibility with the needs of our communities.

Let’s get on with it!

Hence, why for the first time I am standing for Council. With two decades of governance experience across housing, energy, health, education, and economic development, I bring the knowledge and leadership Hamilton City Council needs at this critical time. My focus if I am elected will be on building a financially strong, people-centred Council and serving our city that works for everyone—families, businesses, young people, and our growing diverse communities.

If you didn’t know, about a 1 billion dollar debt is what Council is sitting with which even my 11-year-old son says is mindboggling!  Like any resident/ratepayer I have asked the question, how on earth did we get here??

Vote – have your say!

Your vote is your voice. Vote the same, you get the same.  No vote only favours the incumbent and surprise, surprise, is a political statement.  A fresh perspective with a future focus lens is required to ensure Hamilton is led by astute Councillors who you believe and have faith to understand your challenges, value our diversity as a city, and will be committed to delivering valuable tangible solutions.

Hamilton deserves bold leadership and a council voted in by the majority of as many of its people as possible. The next 3 years matter! Your Vote matters!

Get out and Vote!
